CALLED IT — Wednesday 7/22
“MXL takes #1 on the screen outright — the eleven-session tech silence breaks, with tech at the very top.”
That flag went out in the premium daily notes on Wednesday. The tech momentum surge that followed — MXL accelerating to the single strongest reading on the board — hit its peak two sessions later. Called at the top of the move, in real time — the single-stock screen flagged the turn before the ETF layer’s momentum caught up. The weekly you’re reading is the recap; the calls land in the chat first.
GATE 1 — THE CLOCK
State: PRE-CATALYST DRIFT → the catalyst is now days away.
We closed the week sitting directly in the run-up to the quarter’s defining event, now much closer than last week. The near-term calendar:
FOMC decision + press conference — Wednesday, July 29, 2:00 PM ET. ~2 trading days out. No dot plot (July is not an SEP meeting). Current range 3.50%–3.75%, committee under Chair Warsh.
PCE (June — the Fed’s preferred gauge) — Thursday, July 30, 8:30 AM ET. The morning after the decision.
CPI (July) — August 12. After the FOMC.
The read: the catalyst gap that defined the last two weeks is nearly closed. The one dominant event between now and mid-August is the FOMC on 7/29 immediately followed by PCE on 7/30 — a 24-hour decision-then-inflation-gauge window, with no fresh dots to anchor expectations. Trust level for this week’s signals: PROVISIONAL, and now acutely so. Everything the tape did this week — recovering, holding, breaking to a new low, then holding the break — has to be read as positioning into a known catalyst that is now two sessions away, not as a durable verdict. The verdict gets made on 7/29–30. We are at the point in the clock where the market’s next real move is the catalyst’s to give.
GATE 2 — THE FEAR VARIABLE
Verdict: FEAR ABSENT. All week. Including the break to a new low.
This is the master read of the week, and it is unambiguous — and this week it was tested harder than last, because the market didn’t just stall, it broke to a fresh low:
VIX — crushed in every single session: −24 (Mon), −27 (Tue), −28 (Wed, the deepest of the entire stretch), −24 (Thu, the break day), −24 (Fri). Fear has not lifted once, not on the recovery and not on the break.
Bonds — unbid throughout, and this is the sharpest tell of the week: on Thursday’s −7 break, bonds made new lows alongside equities rather than catching a safety bid. TLT strength fell to 31 on the break day. Treasuries sold off with stocks. That is the opposite of a flight-to-safety signature.
Dollar — flat on momentum for the 27th consecutive session.
None of the three fear signatures fired, even on the break to a new stretch low. In a genuine risk-off event, all three flip — fear bids, duration bids, the dollar accelerates. None of it happened, on the very session the market broke. Equities and bonds selling off together while VIX stays crushed is the signature of a positioning/liquidity flush, not a fear event. This single verdict routes the entire week to the BENIGN branch. The break to a new low is a deeper reset, not a regime change.
GATE 3 — THE PHASE
Phase: RESETTING (deeper). (Not Rolling Over.)
The baseline arc for the week: 48 → 52 → 52 → 45 → 45. After last week’s break to 48, the baseline recovered to 52 on Tuesday, held that recovery through Wednesday — for two sessions it looked like the reset resolving upward and sticking — then broke decisively on Thursday to a new stretch low of 45, undercutting the 48 support, and held that break flat on Friday. Momentum across the week: +4 → +6 → +6 → +4 → +4 — a brief re-acceleration on the recovery, then back to a flat, low crawl as the break hit.
So the recovery failed and the tape broke to a new low. But RESETTING vs. ROLLING OVER is decided entirely by Gate 2 — and fear was absent even on the break. A recovery that holds two days and then breaks to a new low, with no fear signature, bonds selling off alongside equities, into a Fed blackout two sessions from the decision, is textbook pre-FOMC positioning-clearing that went deeper. Money de-risks ahead of a binary event it can’t handicap — and when that de-risking hits both stocks and bonds at once with volatility crushed, it’s a liquidity flush, not a flight. That is a reset, a deeper one, not a rollover.
In the daily notes on Wednesday 7/22, I flagged the tech silence breaking as MXL took #1 on the single-stock screen — the first growth name to lead in eleven-plus sessions, called before the ETF-level momentum surge that followed Thursday. The single-stock layer led the read again, as it did on the fade.
(Note to self — this came from the daily chat notes, not a published post, so it’s a stated callback. Wednesday 7/22 is the accurate first-flag date — keep it exact.)
Default posture from this phase: HOLD, and prepare to add on the reset. Do not sell into a no-fear flush, even one that breaks to a new low. The shopping list for the resolution is now more relevant, not less — the reset went deeper, which means better entries if it resolves up. The one thing that would flip this to ROLLING OVER: fear entering on the catalyst.
GATE 4 — LEADERSHIP CONFIRMATION
Grade: CONFIRMED (high conviction) — the rate-sensitive complex all week, and Health-Care built to the board’s best RLTV by Friday.
The leadership read was the cleanest of the stretch, and like last week it held its ground through the break — the signature of durable leadership. But this week added a second confirmed leg: Health-Care.
The rate-sensitive complex — confirmed across all three levels, holding through the break:
Sector (Level 2): Energy commanded #1 every session; Financials sat #2 at RLTV 1.03–1.04 all week. The cyclical top held even as the market broke.
ETF (Level 3): the rate-sensitive names — oil refiners, REITs, insurance, banking, regionals, transportation, aerospace — held the top tier all week, finishing Friday with CRAK at RLTV 1.12, REZ 1.08, KIE 1.06, and the banks-and-transports cluster at 1.03–1.05. They held their relative ground through Thursday’s break.
Single-stock (Level 4): energy and rate-sensitive names anchored the screen’s middle throughout, with the theme confirmed by the sector and ETF legs above it.
Health-Care built to the board’s best RLTV — a second confirmed leg, strength-backed:
Sector: Health-Care’s RLTV climbed across the week from a middling reading to the board’s best at 1.07 by Friday, with strength firming to 60 and momentum firing +11 — gaining relative strength as the market broke.
ETF: pharma (PPH) and biotech (IBB, XBI) firmed into the Leaders by week’s end, all at RLTV 1.05–1.07.
Single-stock: the screen’s Friday podium was entirely Health-Care — LQDA, CORT, FTRE — carrying strength 62–73 alongside their momentum. When the single-stock leaders carry strength as well as momentum, that is the higher-quality, more durable leadership.
When a theme is confirmed at all three levels and gains relative ground as the market falls, conviction is maximal. This week that was true of two themes at once.
The tech turn — the week’s most dynamic single-stock story, and the screen led it both ways. The single-stock screen that had refused to show a growth/tech name for eleven-plus sessions — the silence that correctly called the tech fade — broke on Wednesday when MXL took #1 outright. The turn accelerated Thursday (MXL to +169, the single strongest reading on the board, nine of twenty names tech), then cooled Friday as Health-Care reclaimed the podium. The screen called the turn before the ETF-level momentum confirmed it — the mirror image of how it called the fade. But the crucial qualifier held all week: the tech turn is momentum only, with no strength confirmation — XLK strength never rose above 46, MXL strength closed at 42. A real momentum turn, but not a strength-backed leadership theme, and by Friday the durable strength-backed leg had reasserted as Health-Care, not tech.
The Health-Care read (through the fear lens): Health-Care built the board’s best RLTV as the market broke. Under the old logic that would read as a defensive-rotation warning. Under the model, it’s read through Gate 2 — and with fear absent, a defensive rising is AI-broadening, not flight-to-safety. This tracks the thesis that Health-Care is a first-order AI beneficiary (the richest proprietary dataset in the economy), and if so, it’s the AI trade broadening out of mega-cap concentration — a healthier tape, not a warning. The tell that confirms it: Health-Care climbed with risk-on internals intact (VIX crushed, bonds unbid, commodities leading), not with a fear signature.
GATE 5 — THE WIRE & THE BAR
Trip wire: DORMANT (but the most assembled it has been). Exit bar: the week’s hardest lesson — a single-session trigger that did NOT sustain.
The Industrials trim wire — dormant, correctly, but the scenario is building. The condition (a defensive holds #1) is false — Energy, a cyclical, commanded #1 all week. And per the refinement, even if a defensive did take #1, the wire only fires with a corroborating fear signature — which is absent. But the relative-strength half of the scenario is now the most assembled it has been all stretch: Health-Care closed the week holding the board’s best RLTV (1.07) and Utilities sat firm at #5. For the first time, a defensive holds the board’s best relative strength while another sits firm in the top half. Industrials, meanwhile, strengthened through the break — XLI firmed to #6 at RLTV 1.01, above the market, with the overweight (ITA, IYT) holding the top tier. No action. Overweight held, and it outperformed. The forward watch: if Health-Care takes #1 outright and fear enters on the catalyst, the wire arms; a defensive leading on RLTV with fear absent does not fire.
The cannabis exit bar — and here is the week’s hardest lesson, stated plainly. The bar is sustained sub-50 STRNG with momentum rolling negative — both halves required, with sustained the operative word. The position’s momentum ran +11 → +3 → +3 into Wednesday — decaying but positive, correctly held. Then Thursday it printed −16, and in the Thursday daily I read the bar as triggered and called for the reduce. Friday refuted that call: momentum reverted straight to +1 positive, and relative strength recovered from 0.81 back to 0.97, beating the market again. A single −16 print that flips positive the very next session is not sustained negative momentum — it was a one-day whipsaw, and Thursday’s reduce call was premature against the bar’s own sustained-negative requirement. This is the third time in this soft patch the position has sat at or through the edge of the bar and re-accelerated — the same head-fake pattern, now three times over. The lesson is exactly the one the framework was built around, and this week drove it home the hard way: the bar requires sustained negative momentum precisely to protect against these one-day whipsaws, and a single-session trigger is not enough to act on. Held through, the position is vindicated again. If the reduce was executed on Thursday’s single-session read, the whipsaw is the cost of front-running the confirmation the bar’s own language requires. The bar holds the line; a single print doesn’t get a vote.
GATE 6 — THE ROUTED DECISION
RESETTING (deeper — recovery failed to a new low, still no fear), Fear Absent, rate-sensitive leadership CONFIRMED at all levels with Health-Care now a second strength-backed leg, trip wire dormant / cannabis held (the bar did not sustain) → HOLD the book and prepare to add on the reset. The 7/29–30 FOMC-plus-PCE cluster is the experiment that resolves reset-vs-rollover, and it is now two sessions away.
The week’s entire read compresses to this: the recovery off last week’s break held two days, then failed to a new low — but without fear, with bonds selling off alongside equities, and into a Fed blackout now two sessions from the decision. That is a positioning reset that went deeper, not a regime change. The book is held. The rate-sensitive complex remains the confirmed leadership and proved itself again by holding relative ground through the break, and Health-Care emerged as a second strength-backed leg, building the board’s best RLTV as the market fell. The cannabis conviction was tested harder than at any point in the soft patch — and the lesson was that a single-session bar trigger that doesn’t sustain is a whipsaw, not a signal.
This Conclusion becomes next week’s Observation. The pre-registered experiment is the 7/29–30 cluster, now imminent. The hypothesis: this is a deeper reset that resolves up. The one thing that would refute it — and it is the single thing to watch above all — is fear finally entering on the catalyst. If VIX lifts and bonds bid on the FOMC or the PCE print, the phase turns from RESETTING to ROLLING OVER and the posture flips to defend. If VIX stays crushed through the cluster, the deeper reset resolves and the shopping list — now with better entries after the break — gets bought.
HOW I’M POSITIONED — THE PUDDING
The book is fully deployed in stocks; the phase read drives theme rotation, not dry-powder timing.
Industrials: overweight — held, and outperformed through the break. The overweight strengthened as the market broke — XLI firmed to #6 at RLTV 1.01, above the market, with aerospace (ITA) and transportation (IYT) holding the top tier of the ETF board. The week-long build of Health-Care’s relative strength is the wire’s scenario assembling, but with fear absent, no fire. The forward watch is the Health-Care/fear interaction into the cluster: a defensive taking #1 with fear is the arm condition.
Long TRIN and MAIN (calls). The rate-sensitive complex was the best-led theme on the board — confirmed at every level, holding relative strength through a break to a new low — and I’ve got direct exposure through Trinity Capital and Main Street Capital call options. The theme held its ground through the break, which is exactly the behavior that keeps me in the position rather than fading a strong move into the catalyst.
Semis: market-weight — the blow-off discipline held. SMH and CIBR carried explosive momentum on middling strength all week (CIBR closing at +33 / RLTV 1.27, SMH +16 / RLTV 1.12) — the do-not-chase blow-off profile. Market-weight sizing means the parabolic momentum was never chased and the name sits held, not pressed, into the catalyst.
Cannabis: held full-size at conviction throughout — and the bar did not sustain. The hardest test of the soft patch: Thursday’s −16 print triggered the bar on a single-session read, and Friday it reverted to +1 positive with relative strength recovering above the market. The position, held through, is vindicated a third time. The lesson written into the book: the exit bar requires sustained negative momentum, and a one-day print is a whipsaw, not a trigger.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The recovery off last week’s break held two days and then failed this week — a decisive Thursday break to a new stretch low of 45, undercutting the 48 support, held flat into Friday’s close. But it broke without fear (VIX crushed through the break, bonds selling off alongside equities rather than bidding, money rotating within risk toward the rate-sensitive complex and Health-Care) and into a Fed blackout now two sessions away — which is why the model reads it as a positioning reset that went deeper, not a regime change. The book is held: Industrials overweight outperformed through the break, market-weight semis kept the blow-off discipline costless, and full-size cannabis survived its hardest test when Thursday’s single-session bar trigger reverted the next day — a whipsaw, not a signal. Two themes are now confirmed leadership at all three levels: the rate-sensitive complex, and Health-Care building the board’s best RLTV as a strength-backed second leg. Into next week the entire read hinges on one variable at one moment: whether fear enters on the 7/29–30 FOMC-plus-PCE cluster. Fear stays absent → the deeper reset resolves up and the shopping list gets bought at better entries. Fear enters → the phase turns and the posture flips to defend.
