CALLED IT — Tuesday 7/28
“Another negative print — two consecutive after the Friday bounce — makes the roll sustained and triggers the reduce cleanly.” That flag went out in the premium daily notes on Monday 7/27, naming the exact condition that would trigger the cannabis reduce. The very next session it delivered — Tuesday printed −21 with strength breaking down, the bar triggered clean, and the reduce was executed. Called one day early, in real time, with the trigger condition named in advance — which is the standard in the daily feed, not the exception. The weekly you’re reading is the recap; the calls land in the chat first.
GATE 1 — THE CLOCK
State: THE CATALYST CLUSTER — resolved.
The read: last week we entered a catalyst gap that ended with a heavyweight cluster; this week that cluster hit and resolved. The FOMC on 7/29 immediately followed by PCE on 7/30 — the 24-hour decision-then-inflation-gauge window we’d pre-registered as the experiment — landed midweek, and the tape gave its verdict. Trust level for this week’s signals: DURABLE. Unlike last week, when everything the tape did had to be read as positioning into a known catalyst, this week’s action is the verdict — the market broke on the FOMC, recovered on PCE, and followed through into the close. The catalyst cluster is now behind us, and what it resolved is no longer provisional: it is the read we carry forward.
GATE 2 — THE FEAR VARIABLE
Verdict: FEAR ABSENT. All week. Including the FOMC-day break to a new low.
This is the spine of the entire week, and the entire two-week experiment. The market broke to a fresh stretch low of 39 on the FOMC (Wednesday), and fear still did not come. VIX (VXX) momentum was crushed every single session — including −25 on both recovery days (Thursday, Friday), vol sold aggressively as the market rallied. Bonds never once caught a safety bid: on the FOMC-day break, TLT strength fell alongside the equity drop, and on Friday’s push to the stretch high, bonds made new lows (TLT 31) while equities rose. Treasuries sold off with stocks on the way down and stayed sold on the way up — no rotation to safety at any point. The dollar stayed weak (strength collapsing to 40–42) on flat-to-mild momentum. Across two breaks to new lows and a full recovery, not one of the three fear signatures ever fired.
GATE 3 — THE PHASE
Phase: RESETTING → RESOLVED UP. (The experiment is answered.)
The baseline arc tells the whole story: 45 → 47 → 39 → 49 → 53. The break held from last week, ticked up on FOMC eve, then broke to a new stretch low of 39 on the FOMC decision — and then recovered +10 to 49 on PCE and followed through to 53 into the close, the highest reading of the entire stretch, clearing the prior 52 high. The deeper reset didn’t just resolve up on the catalyst — it followed through to a new high into the week and month close.
In the daily notes across the whole stretch, I held the read that this was a reset, not a rollover — weighting the absence of fear over the technical breaks, and stating plainly that the 7/29–30 cluster was the experiment that would resolve it. When the FOMC broke the baseline to a new low on Wednesday, the read held: fear was still absent, so it was the deeper reset extending, not a rollover. PCE Thursday resolved it up. (Stated callback from the daily chat notes across the stretch, not a published post — not a link.)
Default posture from this phase: HOLD — the reset-and-add thesis paid off. The pre-registered experiment — reset-vs-rollover, to be settled on the 7/29–30 cluster — resolved on the reset side, exactly as the no-fear read weighted it. The shopping list got bought into the resolution. The one thing that would have flipped this to ROLLING OVER — fear entering on the catalyst — never happened. This Conclusion is not provisional anymore; it is the read we carry into next week.
GATE 4 — LEADERSHIP CONFIRMATION
Grade: CONFIRMED (high conviction) — cyclical/rate-sensitive plus healthcare quality, at all three levels, holding through the break and leading the recovery.
Confirmed across all three levels simultaneously, and tested by the FOMC break:
The rate-sensitive/financial complex and healthcare quality led the entire week, held their relative ground through the FOMC-day break, and led the recovery up — the durable-leadership signature of a real test. Financials and Energy traded the #1 sector across the week (Financials seizing it Monday–Tuesday, Health-Care taking it outright on the FOMC break, Energy closing #1 Friday), with the rate-sensitive complex owning the top of the ETF board throughout (KIE, CRAK, REZ, IPAY, the banks cluster at RLTV 1.05–1.11). Healthcare built to a strength-backed second leg carrying the board’s best RLTV (1.13 midweek), and the single-stock screen was the highest-quality of the stretch — leaders carrying strength in the 80s (AVTR, LAD, CAKE, IQV), CORT exploding to #1 on the recovery on strength 77 and momentum +154.
The tech round-trip — and the re-firing into the close. The single-stock screen’s tech story ran a full cycle: the mid-month MXL momentum spike round-tripped completely (MXL fell out of the screen entirely by Monday, semis momentum collapsing +22→+3 by the FOMC), confirming again that momentum without strength doesn’t last. But into the Friday close, tech momentum re-fired broadly — Cyber (CIBR) exploded to +36 with the board’s highest RLTV (1.31), software (IGV) surged, and four of the screen’s top six turned tech (DDOG, OKTA, FTNT, DELL, momentum in the 90s). This is a stronger signal than the mid-month spike (more names, higher strength in the 50s–60s), but it is still momentum-led — strength has not yet confirmed.
The Health-Care watch (read through the fear lens), and the wire moment. Health-Care carried the board’s best RLTV for much of the week and took the #1 sector outright on the FOMC-day break — the first time this stretch a defensive led the board, and the wire’s leadership condition met for the first time. Under the old logic that would read as a defensive-rotation warning. Under the model, it’s read through Gate 2 — and with fear absent, a defensive taking the lead while VIX is crushed and bonds are selling off is AI-broadening, not flight-to-safety. It tracks the thesis that Health-Care is a first-order AI beneficiary. The tell that confirmed it: Health-Care ceded #1 back to cyclicals the very next session (easing to #3 Thursday and Friday) — a fear-driven defensive crouch does not reverse in a day. It was rotation, not flight.
GATE 5 — THE WIRE & THE BAR
Trip wire: ARMED then STOOD DOWN (correctly). Cannabis exit bar: TRIGGERED — reduce executed.
The Industrials trim wire — armed on the FOMC break, fear-gated, then reversed. The week’s clearest wire validation. On the FOMC-day break (Wednesday), the wire’s leadership condition finally met for the first time this stretch: XLI was not #1, and a defensive (Health-Care) took #1 outright. But the wire is fear-gated — and fear was absent (VIX momentum −17, bonds selling off), so per the refinement it did not fire: defensive leadership without a corroborating fear signature is quality/AI-broadening rotation, not flight. And the three-session-confirmation rule meant no action regardless — Wednesday was at most day one. The validation came immediately: the entire condition reversed the very next session. Health-Care eased to #3, Financials retook #1, and the defensive-#1 read evaporated. Had we trimmed Industrials on Wednesday’s signal, it would have been wrong within a day. The fear-gate and the confirmation rule protected against exactly that. No action. Overweight held.
The cannabis exit bar — TRIGGERED, and executed. The clean counterpoint to last week’s head-fake. The bar is sustained sub-50 STRNG with momentum rolling negative — both halves required, with sustained the operative word. This week it triggered cleanly. The momentum arc: −9 (Mon) → −21 (Tue) — two consecutive, accelerating negative sessions after the prior Friday’s bounce, with strength breaking down from its stubborn 39 to 35 and RLTV collapsing to 0.77. On Tuesday the bar was met on both halves, with the negative momentum genuinely sustained — the reduce was executed. This is the critical contrast with last week, when a single −16 print reverted to +1 the next day and the reduce call was premature (flagged plainly as wrong). This was the opposite: the third-plus session of the roll, two accelerating negatives, strength also breaking. And it was vindicated all week — Wednesday −19 (a third consecutive negative), and Thursday’s strength-bounce to 42 failed as momentum re-deteriorated to −17 by Friday. The complete arc is a textbook bar execution: held through the whipsaw (last week), triggered on sustained confirmation (Tuesday), held reduced through the failed bounce (Thursday–Friday). No front-running, act on confirmation — and the confirmation held.
GATE 6 — THE ROUTED DECISION
RESETTING → RESOLVED UP (break to new low on FOMC, recovery and follow-through on PCE, fear never came), Fear Absent, cyclical/rate-sensitive + healthcare quality leadership CONFIRMED at all levels, trip wire armed-then-stood-down / cannabis exit bar triggered and executed → HOLD the book; the reset-and-add thesis paid off. The 7/29–30 cluster resolved the reset-vs-rollover experiment on the reset side.
This Conclusion becomes next week’s Observation. The pre-registered experiment — the 7/29–30 cluster — is resolved: the hypothesis that this was a reset that resolves up was confirmed. Fear never entered on the catalyst; the baseline broke to a new low on the FOMC and recovered to a new stretch high on PCE, closing the month at 53. The single thing that would have refuted it — fear finally entering — never happened. The read carried forward: a market that reset and resolved higher, with cyclical/rate-sensitive/quality leadership intact. The one new question into next week, and the single thing to watch: whether tech strength follows the momentum re-firing that closed the week (CIBR +36, four tech in the screen’s top six). If tech strength confirms, it’s a genuine rotation back toward tech leadership; if it doesn’t, it’s another spike that fades — the same momentum-without-strength pattern the framework flagged and the mid-month MXL spike already demonstrated.
HOW I’M POSITIONED — THE PUDDING
Industrials: overweight — held, and the wire validated the discipline. The FOMC-day break weakened the leg (XLI fell to #9 on Wednesday), and the same session armed the trim wire for the first time this stretch — a defensive took #1. But the wire was fear-gated (fear absent), so no fire, and the condition reversed within a session, vindicating not acting. XLI stabilized to #6 by Friday, recovered from the low, soft but not breaking. The overweight held through the entire reset-and-recovery.
Long TRIN and MAIN (calls). The rate-sensitive complex was again the best-led theme on the board — confirmed at every level, and it held its relative ground through the FOMC break before leading the recovery. I’ve got direct exposure through Trinity Capital and Main Street Capital call options, core to the BDC/income cohort. The complex owned the top of the ETF board for much of the week (KIE co-leading at RLTV 1.08–1.11) and reasserted on the recovery under a #1 Energy and #2 Financials sector — the theme held its ground through a break to a new low, which is exactly the behavior that keeps me in the position.
Semis: market-weight — the momentum round-tripped, discipline held. The mid-month semis momentum surge collapsed completely this week (SMH momentum +22 → +3 by the FOMC), a full round-trip of a momentum move that never confirmed on strength. Market-weight sizing meant the blow-off cost nothing — the peak was never chased. Into the Friday close, tech momentum re-fired broadly (CIBR +36), but it’s still momentum, not strength — market-weight stays the right posture until strength confirms.
Cannabis: REDUCED per the exit bar — the clean execution. This is the week the bar triggered and the position was cut. After three head-fakes at the bar across the soft patch (each a single print that reverted), Tuesday delivered the real thing: two consecutive accelerating negatives (−9, −21) with strength breaking down — sustained negative momentum, both halves of the bar met. The reduce was executed, and vindicated all week (Wednesday −19, Thursday’s bounce failed to −17 by Friday). The discipline worked exactly as designed: held through the whipsaws, acted on sustained confirmation. No re-entry until momentum turns positive and strength sustains above 50 — neither remotely close.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The two-week experiment closed confirmed and extended. The market broke to a new stretch low of 39 on the FOMC — and fear still never came, the third-plus session of a stretch where VIX was crushed through every break to every new low. PCE resolved it up (+10 to 49), and the recovery followed through to 53 into the week and month close, the highest reading of the entire stretch. The framework’s core call was right the whole way: a no-fear break is a reset, not a rollover — and this one resolved up and extended to a new high into month-end. July closes with the reset-and-add thesis fully paid off.
Two disciplines validated cleanly this week. The trim wire armed for the first time (a defensive took #1 on the break) but was fear-gated and correctly did not fire — the condition reversed the next session, and had we trimmed we’d have been wrong within a day. And the cannabis exit bar triggered on genuine sustained confirmation (Tuesday’s −21 with strength breaking) and the reduce was executed — the clean counterpoint to last week’s premature head-fake call, and vindicated every session since. The guardrails held: no front-running, act on confirmation, and the confirmations held.
The read into next week: a market that reset and resolved higher, with cyclical, rate-sensitive, and quality leadership intact. The one new question — the single thing to watch — is whether tech strength follows the momentum that re-fired into the close (CIBR +36, four tech in the screen’s top six). Strength-confirmation is the tell: genuine rotation, or another spike that fades.
